New Year’s Eve Games for Families, Kids & Adults

New Year's table featuring New Year's games for families, kids and adults from Firefly Parade

There’s something about New Year’s Eve that feels a little different from every other celebration.

Part of the night is about looking forward. New plans. New goals. New possibilities.

But part of it is about looking back too.

The things that made you laugh. The moments you didn’t expect. The things that changed. The people who were there through all of it.

And then, of course, there’s the actual party!

Someone is watching the clock. Someone is already wearing a ridiculous New Year’s hat. The kids are determined to stay awake until midnight. But midnight is only one moment. The memories happen in all the hours leading up to it.

That’s why I love having printable New Year’s games ready. They give everyone something fun to do while you’re waiting for midnight—and they create some pretty great memories along the way.

I’ve put together some of my favorite New Year’s game ideas for different kinds of celebrations, so you can choose what works for your group.

Which New Year’s Game Should I Choose?

Still not sure? Don’t overthink it. Pick something that fits your group—or have a few different games ready and see what everyone feels like playing.

New Year’s Games for the Whole Family

New Year’s Eve is one of those nights when everyone is already gathered and looking for something to do. Especially at 10:37 p.m.

Midnight suddenly feels very far away.

That makes it a perfect night for games the whole family can play together!

New Year’s Friendly Feud

If your family likes a little friendly competition, start here. Divide everyone into teams and try to guess the most popular answers to New Year’s-themed questions.

Sooner or later, someone will become personally offended that their perfectly reasonable answer did not make the board.

That’s when you know the game has officially begun.

New Year’s 5 Second Game

Five seconds.

Three answers.

A brain that suddenly refuses to cooperate.

It’s fast, easy to understand and especially funny when several generations are playing together.

New Year’s Charades

Charades is an easy choice when kids, teens, parents and grandparents are all together.

The New Year’s version includes 90 cards with a mix of actions, objects, songs, movies, books and phrases.

And if everyone is getting a little sleepy as midnight approaches, watching Grandpa silently attempt a New Year’s clue should wake the room right back up.

New Year’s Jeoparty

If your family loves trivia, turn part of the evening into game-show night. Divide everyone into teams and see who knows their New Year’s trivia.

Just remember: being loud and being correct are not technically the same thing!

New Year’s Games for Large Groups

New Year’s Eve is made for a crowd.

Friends. Family. Neighbors. Teenagers. Kids running through the room.

And possibly someone you met for the first time approximately twenty minutes ago.

For larger gatherings, I like games that pull people into the fun instead of leaving half the room watching.

New Year’s Mingle Bingo

If everyone doesn’t know one another, this is an easy place to start.

Mingle Bingo gets guests moving around the room, asking questions and talking to people outside the little group they arrived with. The game gives everyone something to do.

The conversations are the part I really love.

New Year’s Friendly Feud

Friendly Feud works especially well with a crowd because everyone can contribute as part of a team. There will be debating. There will be yelling answers.

There will probably be one person who keeps reminding everyone that they said the correct answer three minutes ago.

New Year’s Forbidden Words

This is another great team game for a larger group.

Players try to get their teammates to guess a word without saying any of the five forbidden words listed underneath.

Turns out explaining fireworks becomes considerably harder when you aren’t allowed to use any of the words that would actually help.

New Year’s Jeoparty

For a trivia-loving crowd, divide everyone into teams and let people work together.

Somebody knows the answer. Somebody thinks they know the answer. And somebody will confidently convince the entire team to go with the wrong answer.

Memories are being made!

New Year’s Games for Kids & Teens

If you’re celebrating with kids, the first challenge may simply be keeping everyone entertained until midnight.

Or until “kid midnight,” which I fully support!

For mixed ages, New Year’s Charades, Think Quick, Pictionary and Scavenger Hunt give kids something active to do.

For teens, I love Photo Scavenger Hunt and What’s On Your Phone? They already have their phones. No need to fight it. Make the phones part of the party!

What Is Your New Year’s Eve Party Name? is another easy icebreaker. Players combine simple personal clues to create a ridiculous New Year’s party identity, making it an easy activity while everyone is arriving.

And if your group gets competitive, New Year’s 5 Second Game can keep kids, teens and adults laughing together.

Quiet New Year’s Activities

Not everyone wants to spend the entire night playing a big group game. And that’s one of the things I especially like about the New Year’s collection. Some of the quieter activities actually fit the meaning of the night.

Reflections & Resolutions gives everyone a chance to look back on the year and think about what they want from the next one.

The Bucket List gives you a place to dream a little about what you’d love to do.

Then there are easy table activities like Word Search, Word Scramble, Finish the Phrase, Emoji Pictionary, Dots & Boxes and the two Word Games.

Put a few on the table with pencils and let everyone choose.

Some people will reflect on the year. Some will make plans for the next one.

And some will become strangely determined to finish the Word Search before anyone else.

There’s room for everybody!

Last-Minute Printable New Year’s Games

New Year’s Eve has a habit of arriving approximately five minutes after Christmas.

You clean up the wrapping paper, eat a few leftovers, look at the calendar and realize...

Oh. We’re hosting people again.

This is exactly why I love printable games.

Choose what you want to play, download the PDFs, print the pages you need and you’re ready.

The 25-game bundle includes conversation games, icebreakers, reflections and goals, group games, challenges, phone games, word games and puzzles, so you can choose a few activities that fit your celebration instead of planning an entire evening from scratch.

Print something quiet for the beginning of the evening. Keep a team game ready for later.

Pull out another activity when everyone looks at the clock and discovers it is somehow only 10:42.

Just print, gather and play.

Want Several New Year’s Games Ready to Go?

If you’re planning a full New Year’s Eve together, I love having choices.

The New Year’s Ultimate Game Collection combines 30 printable games: the 25-game collection plus New Year’s Friendly Feud, Jeoparty, 5 Second Game, Forbidden Words and Charades.

Or choose the 25 Printable New Year’s Games Bundle when you want a mix of conversation games, icebreakers, reflections, group activities, challenges, phone games, word games and puzzles.

You definitely don’t have to play all 25.

That’s the point.

Put a few activities out when everyone arrives. Play a bigger game later in the evening. Save something funny for that stretch when midnight still feels impossibly far away.

Choose what fits your group and your gathering.

The Best New Year’s Game Is the One Your Group Will Actually Play

Eventually, someone will notice the time. Everyone will gather.

Ten.

Nine.

Eight.

And suddenly another year will be behind you.

But hopefully, when everyone looks back on that New Year’s Eve, midnight won’t be the only moment they remember. They’ll remember who made everyone laugh. The game Grandpa unexpectedly won. The ridiculous answers. The pictures. The conversations.

And the simple gift of beginning another year together.

Because the celebration doesn’t have to be elaborate to be memorable.

Sometimes all you need is good people, a little laughter, and a reason to gather.
